Let’s start with the name. #1 actually says Hashtag One, which is funny and weirdly catchy; We’re told that future smartphones will follow the same format. Despite being significantly larger than any previous Smart and almost twice as heavy as the Fortwo, the 1’s numbers are shorter than the segment average, and at 168.1 inches, it’s shorter than the Volvo XC40 Recharge and Mercedes-Benz EQA. The full-width rear light bar is something of a Mercedes, but the rest of the design has an undeniably handsome appeal.
The interior is also impressive in terms of space – much larger than it should be – and design. There’s plenty of back-to-back legroom for full-size adults, and the cabin feels light and airy, even though the roofline’s baby mold cuts through the rear door glass. The large center console has a charging tray, cup holder and cool storage box. Luggage space is limited, however, with just 11 cubic feet behind the rear seats and a small amount under the hood.
Fit and finish in the cabin is good, with interesting touches like LED lighting integrated into the metal air vents and door panels. Almost all physical switches have been removed, and functions are controlled via a large 12.8-inch touchscreen in the center of the dashboard. The screen looks good, but the user interface on our test cars seemed unfinished, with typos and bugs: Switching the stability control system tab to the “on” position turned it off. All of these numbers are at the upper end of the segment standard, with the number 1 delivering a quiet driving experience.
