As a resident of the San Francisco Bay Area, in recent years my main concern has become smoke from wildfires. Wildfires throughout California (and, of course, elsewhere in the world) send huge amounts of smoke into the air. It will sometimes head inland and over cities, causing concern for those worried about breathing bad air. Other times, luckily, it slips into the ocean, a haul, even if it’s not environmental.

All this to say that I have become a bit OCD about the air quality in our house.
Over the past few years, I’ve tested several models from brands you’ll probably recognize if you’ve also studied the air purifier market:
In the end, we ended up with a total of 5 air purifiers located throughout the house. Depending on the size of your home, you may need a number of them. Apartments and small apartments would probably be fine with just one.
If I had to recommend just one air purifier in 2019… a do-it-all device that is inexpensive, easy to use, and cost-effective to run would be one from Coway:

The Coway AP-1512HH, often known by its nickname, the “Mighty,” is manufactured in South Korea and is one of the most popular air purifiers you’ll find.
One is the price. You can find the AP-15122 online for just under $200 USD. Look for frequent sales and it’s less expensive too.
It’s impressive considering this model has an automatic air quality sensor that indicates the current air quality (blue/purple/red) and adjusts the fan speed accordingly and comes with a HEPA filter and a 4-stage filtration system that will remove 99.97. % of air particles. automatically as it runs silently in the background.

For a full evaluation and the market, I recommend diving into this Coway AP-1512HH Mighty review from Wirecutter, which calls it the best all-around air purifier (yet). There is a lot of good information in the article and the Wirecutter team does an excellent job of reviewing the performance of the air purifier using a controlled test environment.
Regarding the competition in this segment and the price, I looked at the Winix models. They are also an air purification giant from South Korea. You can usually find Winix models (C545, 5500-2, etc.) for decent prices at big box stores like Costco. Or try online at Amazon, where you can often find deals.
While the Winix doesn’t have an ECO mode like the Coway that shuts down the unit completely when the air is detected as clean for at least 30 minutes, it does have another trick up its sleeve: a light sensor. The light sensor on Winix models will activate “sleep” mode when darkness falls: the fan switches to the quietest setting and the console lights automatically dim or turn off completely. This makes the Winix models a great consideration for cameras.
If I were to buy a simple and inexpensive air purifier, I would definitely check out Coway and Winix. If you have more to spend there are other options, but I think it would be a good place to start.

From a guy concerned not only about indoor quality and dust, but also the growing threat posed by campfire smoke, I’m pretty impressed with the Coway AP-1512HH Air Purifier so far:
There’s probably more than a subtle resemblance to the Coway with Apple’s iconic design that featured a dial to control the iPod. It’s great for a musician. But for a device meant to blend in with home decor, I’m less enamored. I prefer the modern aesthetic of the new line of Coway Airmega air purifiers (but they are much more expensive and larger).
That aside, I still love the performance of this unit. Place it behind a couch, or place it in the corner of an office or living room, and I think you’ll be impressed. Just remember to give the pre-filter a good clean every 3 months or so, and check the HEPA filter annually and replace if necessary.
In a sea of choice, the Coway AP-15122HH Mighty Air Purifier remains one of the best. Even if it doesn’t necessarily solve it
