Daimler’s Smart brand has confirmed it will stop selling gas-powered cars in the US and Canada, focusing only on the electric version of its two-seat Fortwo model.

It’s the latest in a series of setbacks for Smart, which continues to lose ground despite a redesign last year. Times have been bad, industry analysts said, with gas prices hitting just under $2 a gallon and millions of North American consumers migrating from cars to trucks and other light vehicles.

News of the decision to go all-electric came in the form of a letter sent to smart dealers by Mercedes-Benz USA CEO Dietmar Eckler. Noting that “smart is always synonymous with innovation,” Eckler added that “developments in the microcar segment pose some challenges to the current portfolio of smart products. He concluded that “in the United States and Canada A dedicated focus on electric drive provides a logical step to support a sustainable, zero-emissions future.”
The smart brand has been struggling since the day it was conceived in 1994 – initially as a joint venture with Swiss watchmaker Switch, which quickly pulled out of the project.
Daimler, best known for its luxury Mercedes-Benz brand, decided to target the emerging small car market, a segment expected to be particularly popular on Europe’s crowded streets. But the development process was slow, beset with problems, and Smart failed to achieve its original goals.
The brand came to Canada in 2004, but it took four more years to cross the border into the United States, initially distributed through a division founded by entrepreneur Roger Penske. After a surge in initial sales, demand fell and Penske shifted production back to Daimler.

Sales continued to decline even as gas prices rose. The only sign of progress was the appearance of the second generation Smart ED or Electric Drive Battery model in 2014. In its first year, it accounted for 25 percent of the brand’s US sales.
Daimler hoped to launch the Smart brand with a complete redesign of the small Forte for the 2016 model year. To reduce costs and improve economies of scale, the new model was developed as part of an ongoing partnership with the Renault-Nissan alliance, the French brand that sells its own small car called the Twingo.
Sales in Europe have picked up since then, but Smart sold just 6,211 two-seaters in the U.S. last year, down 16 percent from 2015. Globally, Smart sales totaled 144,470, or 7 percent of Daimler’s sales. Passenger cars in total.
A new battery-powered version of the Smart Fortwo, as well as a larger four-seater not sold in the U.S., was unveiled at the Paris Auto Show last September.

“Smart bets on the battery,” said Dieter Zeits, Chairman and CEO of Daimler AG, as the latest models rolled out on stage.
Offered in both coupe and convertible form, the Smart ED is no Tesla Model 3 fighter. The powertrain is as low as the Smart Fortwo. Its three-phase synchronous motor, powered by a 17.6 kWh lithium-ion battery, produces 80 horsepower and 118 pound-feet of torque. Surprisingly, the numbers Smart cites indicate that the 2017 redesign will be slower than the previous ED version, with the coupe hitting the 60-second mark in 11.4 seconds and the convertible in 11.7 seconds. Top speed is set at 81 mph.
The range is less than 80 miles, or less than a third of what the Chevrolet Bolt EV does on a single charge. But Smart officials say that shouldn’t be a problem because their main audience is urban drivers who don’t drive very far on a typical day.
A major breakthrough comes when it comes time to plug in new ED models. Charging time has been halved, Zeits noted during a press conference in Paris, from 5.5 to 2.5 hours using a 240-volt charger. However, in a standard 110V household outlet in the US, you will need a full 22 hours to fully charge the battery. A major problem for Smart: According to industry analysts, many potential urban customers may not have access to a charging station or even a standard AC outlet.

However, the decision to go electric comes at a time when proponents of battery technology are seeing signs of increased interest in the US market. But Smart hopes to get the Switch to work, otherwise it could go completely offline. Smart is officially exiting the US market and will stop importing its all-electric Fortwo city car to North America after the 2019 model year. A Mercedes-Benz spokesman said in a statement that the Forto’s higher US costs, combined with slower sales, led to the decision. Smart already dropped the petrol Fortwo from its lineup in 2017, leaving only the electric Fortwo, which was recently renamed the EQ model to fit Mercedes-Benz’s new electric sub-brand.
A subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz and parent company Daimler, the Smart first arrived in the U.S. in 2008 and sold nearly 25,000 Fortus in its first year. Since then, sales have fallen sharply, and the downward trend reversed when petrol models dropped from the range. In all of 2018, only 1,276 smart cars were sold in the United States.
Mercedes-Benz says dealers will continue to provide service and parts to current owners of gas and electric-powered Smart Fortwo models. Smart’s US website currently lists 82 dealers nationwide that are authorized to service vehicles, with 23 of those dealers listed as Smart inventory.
The 2019 Smart EQ Fortwo will be available for a while, starting at $24,650. It’s available in both coupe and convertible models, both of which come with 80-horsepower electric motors. EPA-rated range is just 58 miles for the hardtop and 57 miles for the droptop.

When I was hired, my colleagues and you, the reader, knew me as the woman with four SmartFortus. However, I seem to have you all confused with my Volkswagen collection. Well, fear not, dear reader, for I have just added a fifth smart to my fleet. This is a diesel that never made it to the US.
Yes, I said fifth. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t checking out the registry right now to see if anyone else is this crazy. I say I can explain it, but I can’t. But I’m glad I’m addicted to them and there’s nothing that can’t be maintained on different streets like a Ford Touring.
My story of buying this little car started in 2008. I was a 15-year-old high school junior at the time. I didn’t really know anything about myself and spent years in school where I was bullied for more reasons than I can remember. I found solace in cars and technology. My dream cars at the time were the first generation Audi TT and the McLaren F1.
