Daimler’s Smart brand has confirmed it will stop selling gas-powered cars in the US and Canada, focusing only on the electric version of its two-seat Fortwo model.

It’s the latest in a series of setbacks for Smart, which continues to lose ground despite a redesign last year. Times have been bad, industry analysts said, with gas prices hitting just under $2 a gallon and millions of North American consumers migrating from cars to trucks and other light vehicles.

News of the decision to go all-electric came in the form of a letter sent to smart dealers by Mercedes-Benz USA CEO Dietmar Eckler. However, in a standard 110V household outlet in the US, you will need a full 22 hours to fully charge the battery. The 2019 Smart EQ Fortwo will be available for a while, starting at $24,650. It’s available in both coupe and convertible models, both of which come with 80-horsepower electric motors. EPA-rated range is just 58 miles for the hardtop and 57 miles for the droptop.
