Smart Electric Car Charger

Smart Electric Car Charger

Smart Electric Car Charger – All electric cars have the ability to connect to the electric grid. An EV’s built-in charging unit converts AC household current into direct current to charge the battery. While an electric car can be charged using a standard 110-volt outlet, it’s not particularly practical. This is because, depending on the vehicle, it can take anywhere from eight to 24 hours to fully charge its batteries. Therefore, it is wise to install a 240 volt line used with powerful electrical appliances to allow for faster level 2 charging.

You may also want to purchase an external charging device called an Electric Vehicle Service Equipment (EVSE). They are supplied in portable and wall-mounted units that connect directly to the home electrical network. The so-called “smart” charger has Wi-Fi connectivity for added convenience. A Wi-Fi-enabled charger allows the owner to “communicate” with the device via a downloadable smartphone app.

With Wi-Fi, ESVE allows you to start charging remotely, check its progress and monitor how much energy the car is consuming. The device can notify you when the car is charging, when it’s done, and send a notification if you haven’t plugged it in yet. Some Wi-Fi enabled devices can also receive voice commands through Amazon’s Alexa virtual assistant.

Importantly, if your local power company charges less for electricity, you can schedule the app to charge during those times to save money. Some smart chargers can check online when your service provider’s electricity rates are low and automatically start charging during those hours.

Basic home chargers can cost between $300 and $500, but optional Wi-Fi options are more expensive, typically $600 to $800 or more. Popular brands in this regard include Siemens, JuiceBox and ChargePoint. Searching online can help you find a device that has the features and power to suit your needs and budget. Depending on local labor rates and permitting costs, you’ll need to pay several hundred dollars more to install the wall unit.

Depending on where you live, you may be able to take advantage of state and/or local incentives to install an EVSE. For example, the Los Angeles (California) Department of Water and Power offers up to $500 in rebates for the purchase of a qualified Level 2 charger. A complete database of incentives for purchasing and installing a home charging station can be accessed at this link on the ChargePoint website.

When buying a home charger, whether it’s basic or Wi-Fi, make sure it meets your needs. Experts recommend choosing an EVSE that can output at least 30 amps, and it should be connected to a circuit breaker that can withstand at least 40 amps. In general, this type of device can add 30 miles of range to a given battery per hour. Even if you currently have an older EV, buying more power than you need today will make your setup “future-proof” if you trade it in for a model that can handle the extra power.

Make sure the device cable is long enough to reach the electric vehicle’s charging port. Cable lengths between fifteen and 25 feet are common. Consider only chargers that have been tested and certified for safety by an independent source, such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL). And if you’re mounting the charger outside, make sure it’s designed for that purpose.

If you’re considering a smart charger, you’ll want to make sure your home Wi-Fi signal is strong enough to reach the garage. If it’s too weak, you’ll want to buy a Wi-Fi range extender that will pick up the signal and rebroadcast it. This device simply plugs into a standard power outlet between your router and your car’s charging station, but you may need to experiment with the location to maximize its performance. You can find a simple Wi-Fi range extender in the $30-$50 range.

It’s worth noting that some EVs, including the BMW i3 and Nissan Leaf, offer their own apps that replicate many of the smart charger’s additional features. They can also offer the ability to remotely heat the car’s interior in winter or cool it in summer while the car is still connected to the grid. This helps reduce the use of the vehicle’s heater or air conditioning system when leaving the garage to maintain the vehicle’s operating range.

If your EV app is already supported and/or you think a non-Wi-Fi charger is sufficient, you can directly charge any of ClipperCreek’s three popular devices. Available in portable and wired configurations, they range in price from $379 to $565. You can check them out by linking to one of our used EV lists in the Home Charging Options section.
